Baling town ( Pekan Baling ) lies to the south-east of Kedah State and is approximately at 56 km from Sungai Petani town. Situated close to the border of Thailand where the nearest town Betong is just an hour drive from here. Baling was once declared by Malayan government as the state of emergency, where there were war against communist guerrillas occurred in 1948 through 1960. Its clock tower is the most famous landmark that situated in front of Baling town mosque, built to commemorate independence of the country in 1957. The clock is still ticking until today and standing tall with the embossed word "MERDEKA" below its face, which means "INDEPENDENCE". The limestone hill called Baling Hill ( Bukit Baling) makes the town unique. It forms a pictureque backdrop of the town that at almost every angle and every point of the town, this hill can be seen by visitors. Apart from its hill, Baling is also famed for fruits especially durians (King of Fruits). During fruit season between the months of June and August, a lot of local tropical fruits such as durians, rambutans, dokong, langsat, mangosteens and etc are made available on sales along the hilly roadsides. Other places of interest in Baling district are : * Bukit Hijau Recreational Forest - located approximately at 20 km from Baling town. Well known for its amazing seven-level cascading waterfalls that create seven pools of cool, refreshing crystal clear water. * Ulu Legong Hot Spring - located at about 30 km to the North-East of Baling town. The natural hot spring water has a wonder healing properties from the mineral rich water. * Lata Bayu Recreational Forest - Famous for its 20 m cascading waterfalls that forms a pool known as Lubok Lesong, making it an ideal spot for picnicking and swimming activities. * Baling Hill, at height of 574 m has been well known to hikers for its limestone and karst structures. The pictureque scenery from the peak of the hill is a rewarding experience.
