Well, Sultan Muzaffar Shah is the first king of  Kedah.

According to history, Kedah was once a Hindu-Buddhist Kingdom as early as 300AD and said to be the oldest civilization of Peninsular Malaysia. 

Kedah Sultanate began at  Bukit Meriam  in Kuala Muda district, Kedah. It has the earliest monarchy in the history of  Malaysia. 

His Highness was a Hindu, Sanskrit named Maharaja Derba Raja II ( or Better known as  Merong Maha Wangsa ) and believe to have ruled Kedah between 1136 AD to 1179 AD.  He was the first King converted to Islam by an Arab from Aceh and changed the title  of  Maharaja to Sultan. Since then there has been 27 Sultans who ruled Kedah.

Upon embraced Islam, the king commanded that a Hindu-Buddhist temple at the top of Gunung Jerai to be destroyed and a mosque was built in its place.  That was the time when Islam begins spreading widely in the state of  Kedah. He later died somewhere  in 1179 AD.


The royal tomb were then erected  at Kampung Langgar in sub district of  Merbok, Kedah and referred as the first Muslim Kedahan Sultan's grave with three other graves .
