Semiling
Jetty Complex is a popular
tourist destination in the state of Kedah. Located just about 5 km from Sungai
Petani town. It will soon be an ultimate departure point option for
tourists who are travelling to the island of Langkawi via Sungai
Merbok.
The complex at cost of RM 1.7 million was built next to Semiling bridge near Sungar Layar town on a landfilled mangrove swamps of Sungai Merbok under the 8th Malaysian Plan and completed in December, 2008. Sungai Merbok Forest Reserve is among the largest gazetted swamp forest in the country which has an area size of 4,114 hectares. These mangrove ecosystems provide habitat for wide variety of rare and exciting species of migratory birds with more than 30 species of well-preserved mangrove trees and other river swamp trees. It is the astonishing mangrove and river landscapes of Sungai Merbok that draws visitors attention to the sights. ![]() The
Jetty complex comprises of a Mangrove Forest Reserve Museum
(Muzium Hutan Simpan Paya
Bakau), auditorium, multi-purpose hall, tourist information center, a
pontoon jetty and boat loading areas.
Basic facilities provided are car parks, pontoon bridges, toilets,
restaurant, souvenier
shop and prayer room. There is also a pedestrian concrete
walkway of 1
km long in the
complex that offers visitors a closer view deep into the surrounding
mangroves. Visitors may take a river cruise to venture into these magnifient wetlands of Sungai Merbok as services are available at the boarding point of Semiling Jetty.
