Dr. Mahathir bin Mohamad was born in 10th July 1925. He was the
fourth Prime Minister of Malaysia. He held the post for 22
years from 1981
to 2003,
making him the Malaysia's longest-serving Prime
Minister of Malaysia.
The house where he was born is located at No 18 Lorong Kilang Ais, off Jalan Pegawai in Alor Setar. It was a wooden house with roof made of nipah palm and wavy cloths hung from the ceiling. Its floor also made of wood. The single room house was owned by his father, Mohamad Bin Iskandar. The nearby budget hotel at the back of the building is Hotel Seberang Perak. In 1990, the building was taken over by the National Archieves under the suggestion of Kedah Museum Board. A permission was granted by the family to rehabilitate the house in 1992, which had undergone several renovations. ![]() The official opening ceremony of the building to the public was held on 20th December 1992 by Y.B Dato' Sabbaruddin Chik, at that time was the Minister of Culture, Arts and Tourism of Malaysia. | |
