prominent landmark in
Sungai
Petani is its clock
tower situated right in the middle of
Jalan Ibrahim, the main road of the city which is also the Malaysia
Federal Trunk Road ( Route
1).
Today, it has becomes a herritage and charm of Sungai Petani's city. The tower has a height of 12.1 meters tall with a gold coloured dome-shaped top structure. Historically, it was built on 18th, March, 1936 during the British occupation of Malaya, where a foundation stone was laid by the late Madam Koid Cheng Heok, marked the begining of the construction works on the tower had started in the 1st quarter of the year. It was presented to Sungei Patani by the late Penang millionaire, Mr. Lim Lean Teng (林 连 登) to commemorate the reign of His Majesty King George V (1910-1936), as part of the British King George V and Queen Mary 25th (Silver Wedding) anniversary celebrations. In 1958, a bronze statue of the famous Penang millionnaire, Mr.Lim Lean Teng (1867-1963) was erected in front of the Han Chiang High School (韩 江 中 学) in Penang as to honour his great contributions to the society. Mr. Lim Lean Teng then passed away in 1963 at the age of 93. When travelling along Jalan Dato Kramat to Air Itam town in Penang Island, visitors may get a glimpse of this bronze statue of Lim Lean Teng on the left side of the road just before the flyover at Masjid Negeri Pulau Pinang.
